Custom Oklahoma Sooners Jersey Ideas From Seven Heisman Seasons

Kyler Murray No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners 2025 Limited stitched jersey in crimson

Oklahoma has produced seven Heisman Trophy winners, more than enough to give a custom Sooners jersey a number with a story behind it. The list runs from Billy Vessels in 1952 to Kyler Murray in 2018 and covers both running backs and quarterbacks. If you are designing a custom Oklahoma Sooners jersey, here is each winner with the year and stat line you could borrow.

The Running Back Era

1952: Billy Vessels

Vessels won as a senior running back, rushing for 1,072 yards and 17 touchdowns on 167 carries. He was Oklahoma’s first Heisman winner.

1969: Steve Owens

Owens also won as a senior, with 1,523 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns on 358 carries. That carry total shows how much the offense leaned on him.

1978: Billy Sims

Sims won as a junior, rushing for 1,896 yards and 22 touchdowns on 256 carries. Of the three running backs, his yardage total is the highest.

The Quarterback Era

2003: Jason White

White won as a senior, throwing for 3,846 yards and 40 touchdowns. He started a run in which every Oklahoma Heisman winner since has been a quarterback.

2008: Sam Bradford

Bradford won as a sophomore with 4,720 passing yards and 50 touchdown passes. Both totals are still single-season program records.

2017: Baker Mayfield

Mayfield won as a redshirt senior, throwing for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns.

2018: Kyler Murray

Murray followed a year later as a redshirt junior. He passed for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns and also ran for 1,001 yards and 12 more scores.

Number Ideas for a Custom OU Jersey

Since jersey numbers top out at 99, the trick is to use the part of a year or stat that fits:

  • 7 for the seven Heisman winners.
  • 52, 69, 78, 03, 08, 17 or 18 for the year of your favorite winner.
  • 50 for Bradford’s touchdown passes in 2008.
  • 23 for Owens’s rushing touchdowns in 1969.
  • 17 and 18 together on two jerseys for the back-to-back quarterback winners.

Name Ideas

  • A winner’s last name with the year number, such as OWENS 69 or BRADFORD 08, reads as a clear tribute.
  • HEISMAN fits most nameplates if you want the theme without picking one player.
  • Your own last name with 7 keeps it personal and still points to the full list.

Picking a Color and Style

Crimson is the obvious choice for home games, and many current Oklahoma designs also come in anthracite or black alternates. The jersey pictured above is a Kyler Murray No. 1 2025 Limited design in crimson.

If you prefer a ready-made player jersey, the store’s Oklahoma section has pages for names such as Dillon Gabriel, Danny Stutsman, Billy Bowman Jr and Drake Stoops, and there is a separate Oklahoma baseball jersey page as well.
