One of the best-known drinks in sports started with the Florida Gators. Gatorade was developed in 1965 by a team of University of Florida researchers led by Dr. Robert Cade. For Gators fans designing a custom Florida Gators jersey, that story offers an easy-to-explain theme, and it fits especially well with the 1960s throwback look pictured above.

A Coach’s Request in 1965

The drink started with a question from the football staff. According to the history of the product, Florida head coach Ray Graves asked for help with the body fluids players lost during physical exertion. Cade’s team created a drink meant to replace what athletes lost through sweat. Ten Florida football players tested the first version in 1965.

Cade did not work alone. Dana Shires, Harry James Free and Alejandro de Quesada are also credited as part of the research team.

Why It Is “Gatorade,” Not “Gator-Aid”

The researchers first thought about calling it “Gator-Aid.” Shires later explained that they were told the Food and Drug Administration would not allow that name, so they changed the ending to “ade.” The result is the name now printed on bottles around the world.

The 1967 Orange Bowl

The Gators credited the drink with helping them win their first Orange Bowl, against Georgia Tech in 1967. Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd summed it up afterward: “We didn’t have Gatorade. That made the difference.”
