Alabama went more than seven decades without a Heisman Trophy, then won four in thirteen seasons. Each winner wore a number Crimson Tide fans know well. If you are ordering a custom Alabama jersey and want the number to mean something, those four are a strong place to start.
No. 22: Mark Ingram, 2009
Ingram gave Alabama its first Heisman in 2009, and it was close. He edged Stanford’s Toby Gerhart by 28 points, 1,304 to 1,276, which was the tightest vote in the award’s history at the time. He ran for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns that season, and Alabama won the national title.
Why fans pick 22: it marks the start of the modern Alabama Heisman run. For anyone who remembers the 2009 team, it is the number that began it.
No. 2: Derrick Henry, 2015
Henry won six years after Ingram, running for 28 touchdowns on 395 carries. He later wore 22 in the NFL, but at Alabama he was No. 2, as the Baltimore Ravens noted when he joined them.
Why fans pick 2: a single digit looks bold on the back, and for many fans it is shorthand for one of the most physical running backs Alabama has had.
No. 6: DeVonta Smith, 2020
Smith became the first wide receiver to win the Heisman in decades, catching 117 passes for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns. He kept the same No. 6 when he moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Why fans pick 6: it connects Alabama with a receiver many fans consider one of the best in the program’s history, and it works on both college and pro jerseys.
No. 9: Bryce Young, 2021
Young followed Smith a year later, making it back-to-back winners for Alabama. The Heisman Trust’s notes on the 2021 ceremony list his 4,322 passing yards and point out that he was the program’s fourth winner, after Ingram, Henry and Smith.
Why fans pick 9: it is the most recent of the four, and for younger fans Young’s teams are the ones they grew up watching.
How to use these numbers on a custom jersey
Your name, their number
A common approach is your own surname with one of the four numbers. It keeps the jersey personal while still pointing to a Heisman season.
Match the number to a family member
If you are ordering for more than one person, give each a different Heisman number. A family wearing 22, 2, 6 and 9 together makes a good photo at a game.
Choose by era
Pick the season you remember best. A fan who started watching around 2009 might choose 22, while someone who found the team in the early 2020s might lean toward 6 or 9.
Prefer the player’s own name?
If you would rather wear the player’s name, our Alabama section includes jerseys for Mark Ingram, Derrick Henry, DeVonta Smith and Bryce Young, plus Nick Saban listings like the No. 7 Champions jersey shown above for fans who think of the coach first.
A few order notes
- Type the name exactly as you want it printed; custom nameplates follow what you enter.
- Check which colors the listing offers. Crimson is the home look; white is the road look.
- Use the size chart and compare it with a jersey you own.
