BYU Cougars Jersey Colors: Royal, Navy, White and 1996 Throwback

Navy BYU number 8 YOUNG jersey with white numbers and striped sleeves, front and back, with a Big 12 logo

The football side of the BYU Cougars jersey category is compact: one main Vapor Limited line, four named players and a set of customs. What it lacks in roster size it makes up for in color, with six colorways for every name. This guide explains each colorway, how to choose it and one listing quirk that can make the category look bigger than it is.

The six colorways

Every listing in the Vapor Limited College Football Stitched line ends with one of these color labels:

  • White
  • Royal
  • Royal Alternate
  • Navy
  • Black Alternate
  • 1996 Throwback

The color is fixed by the title, so each colorway is a separate page. There is no color menu on these listings.

Royal versus navy

BYU is one of the few teams on the site with both a royal and a navy option in the same line. Royal is the brighter blue, and navy is the darker one shown at the top of this page. Royal Alternate is a second royal design rather than a different shade; open the Royal and Royal Alternate photos side by side to see how they differ.

If you want blue but are not sure which, compare one player across Royal, Royal Alternate and Navy before deciding.

Black Alternate and 1996 Throwback

Black Alternate is the only black option in the BYU football listings, and it is offered for every player. 1996 Throwback is named as a colorway rather than a separate line, so it sits alongside the other five in the same titles. It is the choice for a retro look within the current Vapor Limited listings.

Who is in the line

Four players have all six colorways:

  • Hinckley Ropati #7
  • Jake Retzlaff #12
  • Steve Young #8
  • Ty Detmer #14

There are no fan nameplates or team-number jerseys in the BYU football listings. For any other name or number, use the custom listings below.

Why each colorway shows up three times

Search for one of these players and you will see far more results than six. That is because every player and color combination is listed three times with identical titles, for example three Steve Young #8 Navy pages. They are the same colorway repeated, not three designs. Pick any one of them for that color.

Counting it out, the four players produce seventy-two listings that represent twenty-four distinct player and color options.

Matching a colorway to the occasion

Because every player has the same six options, the choice is mostly about where the jersey will be worn and what it should match. A few practical pointers based on how the listings are labelled:

  • For a classic blue look, compare Royal and Navy first; they are the two base blues.
  • For something less common in the stands, Royal Alternate and Black Alternate are the two alternate designs.
  • For a retro style, 1996 Throwback is the only colorway with a year in the name.
  • For a light option, White is the single non-blue, non-black choice.

If two family members want different players in the same color, open the same color label on each player’s listing so the designs line up.

Custom colors

The custom Vapor Limited listing covers the same six colorways: White, Royal Alternate, Royal, Navy, Black Alternate and 1996 Throwback. Two further customs offer different looks: Custom BYU Cougars Jersey Name and Number Navy Game College Football and BYU Cougars Custom Jersey Name and Number Royal College Football Alumni Legend.

Some listings carry a patch add-on menu with 150th, 2022 or 2023 in black or white, or Without Extra Patch. That menu adds a patch and does not change the jersey color.

Sizing and descriptions

Sizes run S to 3XL for Men, Women and Youth. The BYU product descriptions are general copy about personalized Cougars jerseys and do not list fabric or stitching details, so rely on the photos for construction.

Basketball listings

About nineteen basketball jerseys are filed in the same category. They include NIL College Basketball Lightweight listings in royal and navy and College Basketball 2022-23 white listings for Trevin Knell #21, Spencer Johnson #20, Noah Waterman #0, Jaxson Robinson #2, Dallin Hall #30 and Aly Khalifa #50, plus custom White, Royal and Elite Navy versions. Their titles say Basketball.

Choose the colorway first, then the player. The BYU Cougars jersey list has all six colors for each name.
